New Rangers head coach Danny Rohl says he is at Ibrox to win titles with attractive football – but has his focus on delivering wins in the short term.
Rohl was introduced to the media on Tuesday after being appointed as the successor to Russell Martin, signing a deal until the end of 2028.
The German is tasked with turning the team around after a disastrous start to the season that sees the team sitting eighth in the league, out of the Champions League and having lost both Europa League matches so far.
He says he is under no illusions about the short-term demands, admitting the club needs to put a string of wins together to build confidence, but is attracted to the club’s potential for silverware.
“We know where we are the moment,” Rohl said. “I am committed to this job, and know what it is demanding.
“It starts on Thursday with the first game. We want to win. We need wins. We need to turn around the position at the moment.
“We are not happy, and it’s the reason why I’m here.
“I’ve said in the past I was looking for an ambitious club, that’s looking for more.
“I looked for a club to win titles. This club has everything for all these goals and it’s amazing to be coach at this fantastic club. I know what it means and I think I will feel this in the next couple of days and weeks.
“My job is clear and I know what I want to do with this group of players.”
Rohl was appointed at the end of a recruitment process that saw Steven Gerrard walk away from talks when he looked set to return to the club, Rohl himself withdraw from the race and a deal for Kevin Muscat fail to reach a conclusion before the German finally landed the job.
He shrugged off questions about not being first choice or why he had initially ruled himself out, saying instead that the most important thing was the final outcome.
“We had (further) conversations and there was trust,” he said. “Football is about timing. The club was fighting, and looking for me, and we were still talking.
“That’s very important and it’s the reason I’m here and looking forward to being part of this club.
“The most important thing is I am here. We had meetings, we spoke, and didn’t stop the communication.
“You could be second, third or fourth choice, you need to win games. I am here – that gives me belief I am the first choice.”
The former Sheffield Wednesday boss hopes to hit the ground running with a Europa League clash against Brann Bergen in Norway on Thursday night.
He outlined what fans can expect from his side in the long-term but insists the immediate demand is to get three points and worry about style later.
“The football I want to see on the pitch has intensity, has sprints, togetherness and a forward-playing style,” he said.
“We want to create chances and goals, and we also have to understand and we have to defend as a group and a unit much, much better with a lot of aggressiveness in the duels. That’s what I want to bring to this club.
“I want our fans to go home and have been entertained.
“First you have to win games, then you speak about attractive football. And if you do those points, then we have togetherness with our fans again.”
Despite the disappointment for fans since the summer, Rohl remains optimistic things can change quickly and there is no reason to write off the season.
“We are still in four competitions and can take all competitions,” he said. “But we have to work hard and we have to win games.
“This should be a restart.”
