Michael Wimmer ended a busy first week of fixtures as Motherwell boss with a stunning 2-1 Premiership win over Rangers at Ibrox and now plans to improve his side further.

After starting his tenure last weekend with 1-0 defeat at Dundee United, the German boss recorded his first victory in midweek with a 2-1 win against Dundee before tearing up the script in Barry Ferguson’s first home game as Gers’ interim boss.

The Steelmen sprang out of the traps and led at the interval through goals from Luke Armstrong and Tom Sparrow and although the home side responded with a Cyriel Dessers goal after 54 minutes, the Lanarkshire side remained resolute to take the three points.

With Scottish Gas Scottish Cup ties taking place next weekend – and the Fir Park side not involved – Wimmer now has until March 15 before the next game against St Mirren.

He told MTV: “All we spoke about before the game, we tried to bring it on the pitch and the first half was brilliant. The first half was like it was in my mind, like we talked about before.

“Also, the second goal was exactly what we spoke about.

“The guys have great character, they have a big work ethic. They want to learn, they are hungry to learn and to get all the information.

“I’m happy that it worked on Saturday and I’m happy that I can work the next 14 days on the training pitch because there’s more in detail and more in content and I hope it gets better.”

Wimmer claims last Wednesday’s win over Dundee on Tayside gave him the belief that his side could see out the second half at Ibrox when Rangers pushed to get something from the game.

He said: “We made good substitutions (on Saturday) and the substitutes were immediately in the game.

“It was what I expect from players on the bench, that they come in and they bring the input that we need and in the end we did it very well.

“This was a good win, but this is only a picture for me.

“I said before the game and before the Wednesday game, we have to take it game by game.

“It’s a big win, a very big win, a very important three points, but we have to keep going, working, working, working and if we work hard enough, if we work like this, then the points will come but if we don’t work hard enough, the points will not come, so we have to work hard.”
