Lawrence Shankland is relishing the addition of Kevin Kelsy to Rangers, with the Venezuelan striker bolstering the Ibrox club’s ranks.
The 22-year-old forward, arriving from Portland Timbers for a fee of £9.2m, will fill a gap left by Youssef Chermiti, who is facing a long-term lay-off after suffering an ACL injury.
Speaking after scoring a brace in Rangers’ 2-1 win over Falkirk, the Ibrox captain said: “There’s always got to be healthy competition at football clubs like this.
“You know that coming in. You’re obviously talking about the transfer fee. It’s obviously an important one, but that’s the way football is going. If you want good players, you need to pay money now.
“He’ll be a welcome addition to the squad and throughout the season we are going to need good players to turn up, so hopefully he can come and do that as well now and hit the ground running.”
Rangers earned their second consecutive league win with the victory over John McGlynn’s side after a double from the skipper either side of a Kosta Nedeljković own goal.
And the summer signing is adamant the arrival of the former Shakhtar Donetsk forward will only increase his side’s chances of success this season.
He said: “You want good competition within the squad. You want good players in your squad and that maybe allows us to play different systems at times.
“The manager likes to change at times with one striker, sometimes he goes with two, so listen, the more options that we have the better.
“The quality throughout the squad needs to be good throughout the season if we’re going to be successful, we know that, and I’m looking forward to working with him.”
