Lawrence Shankland delivered a “proper captain’s performance” in Rangers’ 2-1 win over Falkirk, Derek McInnes has insisted.

The Ibrox skipper scored twice either side of an own goal from Kosta Nedeljković to ensure a 2-1 win at the Falkirk Stadium, sealing Rangers’ second consecutive league victory.

The squad have been under intense pressure after they failed to win either of their opening two league games, as well as being dumped out of the Europa League and the Conference League at the qualifying stage.

Derek McInnes was delighted with the contribution of his captain, who has now taken his tally to three league goals, branding the display at the Falkirk Stadium “a proper captain’s performance”.

The Ibrox boss said: “I’m very pleased for Lawrence Shankland. I thought his second goal was particularly good considering he missed the chance that he would have been kicking himself with.

“It was a proper captain’s performance out there tonight. Like all good strikers, the experience of Lawrence, the calmness of Lawrence, the quality to come up with the big moment.

“His first goal was a fantastic strike. I was screaming at him to leave it for [Djeidi] Gassama, but he sticks in the back of the net.

“I thought he led the line really well. So I’m delighted for him. For all of us, it’s not been the easiest of starts and, obviously, Lawrence would feel the weight of that a lot more than some others because of his background and how eager he is.”
