Laura Muir set a new British 1500m record and says she thinks she can still go faster after an impressive run in Paris.
Muir ran the distance in 3:53.79 as she finished third in an amazing Diamond League race where Faith Kipyegon smashed the world record with a time of 3:49.04 and Australian Jess Hull ran 3:50.83 for second place.
“I think that is four in a row now where I’ve raced and Faith has set the World Record”, Laura told Scottish Athletics in Paris, less than a month before the Olympics start in the French capital.
“I told her I am her lucky charm. It is amazing from her and so nice to be part of these races.”
Muir said that she had to keep focus on herself as she set a personal best and was delighted, and emotional, at the result.
“I absolutely had to run my own race and I’ve only ever run 3:54 once and that was in Tokyo (Olympic silver medal),” she said.
“I knew it would take something special to even run that again. To run 3.53, I can’t put into words how it feels. I’m emotional to run that time – it means a lot to me.”
While Kipyegon took the headlines, Muir took her own rewards from her time and she believes she can go faster after finding she still had something in the tank at the end.
“I knew I had to run my own race,” she said when asked about racing against the world record holder.
“When it’s a pace like that and the pace Faith is going, it would be a stretch. I still think I was so strong at the end. I was still going at the end and maybe there’s a 3.52 in there but I’ve not run at that pace for a while.
“To run that and be standing up at the end, I still had a bit left, which is great.
“You just have to run your own race. You never know what will happen in 1500m but it’s pretty safe to say usually she is a bit ahead. It’s great to be racing with her.”
