Kevin Muscat’s move to become Rangers’ new head coach is off.
It is understood talks with former Gers player Muscat reached an advanced stage following the sacking of Russell Martin earlier this month.
He was on the brink of agreeing a deal on Thursday, but remains under contract at Chinese Super League club Shanghai Port.
It is understood the prospect of the 52-year-old not being available until potentially as late as December made a deal unworkable.
Rangers aim to make an appointment in the coming days and it is understood a number of candidates are still being spoken to.
It came after Steven Gerrard pulled out of the running to become boss for a second time.
Former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl also withdrew from the process after discussions with the Ibrox hierarchy.
