Jo Potter says derby games 'bring a little bit extra' as Rangers prepare for Celtic clash

Rangers manager Jo Potter says derby games “bring a little bit extra” as she prepares her team to face Celtic this weekend.

Only two points separate the top four in the SWPL after 12 games of the campaign this season.

Potter’s side are currently in second with their Old Firm rivals one point behind in fourth place ahead of Sunday’s clash at Hamilton’s New Douglas Park.

And while she admits there is always extra excitement when they play Celtic, the Rangers boss insists they need to have the same mentality for every game.

Speaking on Friday, she said: “Whenever there is a derby or an Old Firm it always brings that little bit extra and I think you just feel it, it’s in the build-up to it all week, it’s everything that surrounds it with the media before the game there’s always an added edge.

“Whenever you play your rivals you want to win and there’s a little bit more spice to it.

“These games are the exciting ones.

“Big games are coming around more often so hopefully it will start to feel like this other than just against Celtic or City.

“It can feel different, but I don’t think it will to the players because they want to win every single game no matter who we are playing.

“You always want to play against and beat the better teams, but our mentality has always been the same in every game we play.

“So we need to make sure we have still got that mentality to go and win every single week, because we saw last year that we slipped up elsewhere and that was our downfall.

“We need to make sure we are looking after that but still doing what we have done really well in these head-to-heads.”
