Jens Berthel Askou shuts down Lennon Miller talk as rumours continue

The highly rated teenager has been linked with a move away from Fir Park.

Motherwell manager Jens Berthel Askou is happy to wait for the right resolution to Lennon Miller’s future as he signalled he would stop talking about the midfielder’s transfer status.

The 18-year-old’s father, former Hearts and Aberdeen striker Lee Miller, declared at the weekend that he expected a bid to come in for his son in the next two weeks.

One offer for the Scotland international could spark a transfer battle but Askou is keen to shift the focus on to football ahead of his first home match in charge, against Peterhead in the League Cup on Tuesday.

Miller will again miss the game as a precaution after sitting out Saturday’s 2-2 draw against Clyde with a minor fitness issue.

Askou said: “I think there’s been enough said about Lennon’s situation for now. We have a game (on Tuesday), and I think that’s the most important thing for us to focus on.

“I know and I understand and we appreciate all the interest there is around Lennon, and his future, and Motherwell as a football club.

“But I think for us right now it’s time to say, let’s look at it when something specific and concrete comes up, and when we’re ready to inform.

“That’s the last thing I will say now in terms of commenting on Lennon. And in general, when we have interesting players that might take the next step, we’re not looking for fast and quick solutions. We’re looking for the right solutions for the players and for the club long-term.

“Sometimes things move fast, sometimes it takes a little bit longer. That’s not always up to us to decide or to control.

“The market is lively, sometimes it’s crazy. And sometimes clubs are waiting or players are waiting for the right move.”

Motherwell signed four players last week and Askou anticipates more new arrivals before Rangers visit Fir Park in the William Hill Premiership on August 2.

“I’m quite confident that we will do more before the league starts,” the Dane said. “Whether we’ll be finished, that’s hard to say, because when the league starts, there’s still about a month left of the transfer window.

“I think it would be the first time for me that I have experienced that nothing happens the last month of a transfer window, especially in the summer. So I would be surprised if that was the case, but you never know.

“But right now, we’re working really hard in the background to adjust things and get new players in and deal with the interest around our own players.”

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Aston Oxborough has returned to training and is “not far away” from a comeback from a pre-season injury.
