Jens Berthel Askou has refused to reveal if he was offered the Celtic job before leaving Motherwell for Toulouse.

The former Fir Park boss was heavily linked to the role before Martin O’Neill was appointed on a permanent basis in the summer after leading the club to a domestic double.

The Dane joined the Ligue 1 side after leading Motherwell to fourth place in the Scottish Premiership during his 11-month stint in Scotland.

Speaking to Open Goal, the 44-year-old said, “I don’t want to talk about what other opportunities might have been.

“I will let people speculate about that. I am here now, and I am happy about that.

“I feel it’s a very good decision I have made.”

Alfred Johansson has picked up where his predecessor left off with just one defeat in his opening five matches in charge of the Steelmen.

“He gave me a call, and we had a good conversation,” said Jens Berthel Askou.

“He had a couple of questions, and he was really excited about different things.

“I’m really happy on his behalf he’s had a good start because you always need that as a manager.

“With the success we had last year, and with the players he has lost, it is not easy.

“With the amount of injuries too, I am very impressed they have been able to perform so well in the early part of the season.

“I think they are in for a very exciting season.”
