Rangers captain James Tavernier admits there’s a lot of excitement around Thursday’s Europa League tie against Tottenham Hotspur – and he hopes Ibrox noise can unsettle Ange Postecoglou’s side.
The teams meet in Glasgow in a mouthwatering clash, with both sides looking for a win that would see them take a significant step towards a top-eight finish and a pass to the last 16 of the competition.
The return of former Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou in the opposition dugout adds extra drama to what is already a big game for Rangers.
“I think there’s a lot around this game,” Tavernier said. “You know, it’s a ‘Battle of Britain’, a Premier League team.
“There’s a lot to it. It’s probably exciting for everybody outside.
“I think it will be a great atmosphere. I think everybody will be really looking forward to it. We’re trying to make it as hard as possible for Tottenham.”
Asked if the atmosphere could unsettle even experienced players like the stars of the Spurs side, Tavernier pointed to the big nights of Rangers run to the Europa League final as proof of what can be done on home soil.
“I think they can [be unsettled],” he said. “If you look back at the run to Seville, I’ve never experienced that and there were some really big nights.
“We get 50,000 fans in the stadium every single week but the European nights were something really special.
“Hopefully we can create that kind of atmosphere again tomorrow night.”
