Scottish tennis star Jacob Fearnley has defeated Arthur Cazaux to reach the third round of the Australian Open.
The 23-year-old, from Dalkeith, came back from a set down to win the second-round clash 3-1 on Wednesday morning.
He is taking part in his first Australian Open and second Grand Slam after reaching the second round of Wimbledon last summer.
His journey will now continue even further after another impressive win that puts him in the last-32 of the competition where he will play second seed Alexander Zverev.
The German beat Spaniard Pedro Martinez in straight sets on Wednesday.
Fearnley would have been expecting a more low-key atmosphere than the cauldron he faced on John Cain Arena on Monday but Melbourne Park’s Court 6 has a bar for spectators on one side and the fans settled in for the evening were eager to have a good time.
At least the Scot had a good proportion of the support this time, while there was also a lively section cheering on Cazaux, who knocked out 28th seed Sebastian Baez in round one.
Fearnley, who beat former Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios in the first round, found himself 2-0 down when the match was temporarily suspended when heavy rain in Melbourne flooded the court.
When it restarted Cazaux continued where he left off by winning the next game to go 3-0 up and eventually winning the first set 6-3.
Fearnley won his serve to take a 1-0 lead in the second set but the Frenchman responded in kind to make it 1-1 before going 2-1 up.
But the Scot fought back to go 3-2 and then 5-4 up, eventually taking the set 7-5. He then raced into a 4-1 lead in the third set before breaking Cazaux’s serve to win 6-2.
In the fourth set he broke his opponent’s serve again to take a commanding 3-1 lead that soon turned to 4-1 as he began to close in on the third round.
He won two of the next four games to win the fourth and final set 6-3 and take the match by three sets to one.
