In pictures: Past meetings between Scotland and Hungary ahead of crunch Euros clash

Scotland’s crucial Euros clash with Hungary on Sunday night will be the first time that the sides have met competitively – but they have previously faced each other in nine friendlies.

From humiliation under Vogts, to a first win for McLeish, to defeat under Stein, and to current boss Clarke turning out, Scotland has had a mixed bag of results against the Hungarians in recent years.

Scotland, who have never qualified for the knockout stages of a major tournament, would almost certainly qualify for the last 16 with a win against Hungary in Stuttgart.

With everything on the line on Sunday, STV Sport has taken a look back at the last four encounters between the sides.

Hungary 3 Scotland 1 – May 31, 1980

Just before the 1980 European Championships in Italy, which neither side qualified for, the Scots travelled to Budapest for a friendly.

The visiting side featured heavyweights like Danny McGrain, Kenny Dalglish and Archie Gemmill, but it proved a chastening affair for Jock Stein’s side as the hosts eased to victory.

Andras Torocsik scored a double to put Hungary in control before Steve Archibald pulled one back, but Zoltan Kerekl sealed the Hungarian win.

Scotland 2 Hungary 0 – September 9, 1987

Towards the end of what proved to be a futile bid to qualify for Euro 88, Andy Roxburgh’s Scots welcomed the Hungarians to Hampden in another friendly.

Scotland 0 Hungary 3 – August 18, 2004

Back in August 2004, just weeks before the start of their 2006 World Cup qualifying campaign, Berti Vogts’ side suffered a humiliating friendly defeat to the Hungarians.

Goals either side of half-time from Szabolcs Huszti were followed by a late own goal from Steven Pressley.

It was the worst defeat at Hampden Park since losing 5-0 to England some 31 years earlier.

Hungary 0 Scotland 1 – March 27, 2018

Scotland eked out their first win of Alex McLeish’s second spell in charge in a friendly in Budapest.

The night also saw current squad member Jack Hendry make his full international debut.

Captain Charlie Mulgrew saw a penalty saved before West Brom forward Matt Phillips secured victory when he tapped home what proved to be his only international goal.
