Louis Moult’s song has followed him around the UK and the Dundee United striker was delighted to hear it again after scoring a stunning winner against St Mirren on Saturday.

The 32-year-old striker took an injection on his shoulder after a month out to take his place on the bench and he replaced Glenn Middleton after an hour in Paisley with the Premiership clash goalless.

Moult produced an overhead kick in the 88th minute to spark wild scenes of delight among the travelling support who belted out his song, an adaptation of the Spandau Ballet classic ‘Gold’, and it was music to the veteran’s ears.

United keeper Jack Walton then saved a penalty from Saints substitute Toyosi Olusanya in added time to take the three points back to Tayside.

“It’s an unbelievable feeling when you hear the fans sing it,” said Moult.

“It’s a song that has followed me my whole career, from Nuneaton, Wrexham, Motherwell – now the Dundee United faithful are ringing it out.

“I love it, I will be honest with you. I’m going to milk it. I do find myself in the shower humming along to it, sometimes.

“Those scenes at the end is what we are all about. Two years ago, this club was on the decline, and we are hopefully on that upwards trajectory now.

“We need to continue that. And when you see the players, manager, board, fans all together as one, it’s hard not to be successful.”

Moult revealed he had been reminded of his overhead kick for Wrexham in a 2-2 FA Trophy draw at Stockport in January 2015 just before the trip to Paisley.

He said: “It’s bizarre. It was 10 years on Friday that I scored an overhead kick for Wrexham against Stockport and it popped up on my social media.

“It’s funny how things like that happen. Maybe it was in my mind, subconsciously. So, when the ball drops, I thought ‘set it up for a bicycle kick’.

“I can’t believe I can still get my leg that high. And when I was on the ground I was saying ‘is it in? Is it not?’ It was relief when it went in.”

Moult may have been relieved but he was not surprised that he was the man who made the difference.

He said: “I actually turned around to the bench before I came on and said ‘this just stinks of a Louis Moult 1-0 win’.

“You might think that sounds cocky, but I think that’s just belief. I’ve always been a guy who’ll believe in my ability to score goals.

“I’ve not done much training, at all. I had an injection before the game.

“I wasn’t going to be involved on Saturday, but I knocked on the gaffer’s door and said ‘give me the injection and, if we can get through it, then I want to be involved’. I was going insane watching and not being involved.

“Thankfully the gaffer wanted me involved and the injection was unbelievable.”
