Cammy Devlin is unfazed about being in the final year of his Hearts contract as he insisted his future “will take care of itself”.
The Australia international has just kicked off his fifth season at Tynecastle, where he has established himself as a key player, with new boss Derek McInnes recently outlining his admiration for the combative midfielder.
Hearts last year took advantage of an option to extend Devlin’s deal until 2026 but, as it stands, the 27-year-old will be able to talk to other clubs at the turn of the year.
“I was in a similar position this time last year in terms of coming to the last year of my contract, and I don’t really like thinking about it,” he said.
“I think if you just perform well, if I’m fortunate enough to play the games on the weekend, I’ll just always put my head down and work as hard as I can and I think it will take care of itself, whether it’s a positive or a negative.
“For me personally, I just come into work every day, work as hard as I can and hopefully get picked to play on the weekends.”
Devlin, said he feels “really lucky” to have been at Hearts for four years, but is in no rush to have his future sorted.
“Yeah, there’s always ongoing talks,” he said when asked if there had been discussions with the club. “They’ve spoken to my agent, not me.
“There’s been a lot going on with, obviously, Tony Bloom coming in (as an investor). Obviously, the transfer window’s open so there’s been so many new players coming in and things like that happening, so I don’t think that’s the focus now.
“The focus has been bringing players in. And, like I say, with performances, hopefully good performances, I’m sure that will just look after itself in the future.”
Devlin believes Hearts are on course for an exciting future under McInnes’ stewardship and with the involvement of Bloom and Jamestown Analytics, with the Brighton owner declaring earlier this week that he would be “very disappointed” if the Edinburgh club did not win the Scottish Premiership in the next 10 years.
The Jambos have kicked off the new season with five consecutive victories in all competitions.
“With Tony Bloom coming in, there’s a lot of talk going on about that, and there’s definitely a lot of excitement around Hearts,” Devlin said ahead of Sunday’s Premiership trip to Dundee United.
“I feel like there always should be because of the size of the club. When you’re playing football, you play to win, so I think when you’re at a club this size, you want to be ambitious. You want to win things, so I think it’s definitely exciting.”
