Scotland’s teenage winger Ben Doak lit up Hampden with his attacking performance in the 1-0 win over Croatia and said he wasn’t awed by the opposition’s star names.
Doak was a persistent threat on the right flank where he was up against Manchester City star Josko Gvardiol and it was his shot on goal that led to John McGinn smashing in a late winner.
The 19-year-old was named as player of the match, overshadowing Croatia’s Luka Modric among others, but he said the important thing was the result and not his own personal contribution.
“The mood in the dressing room is really good,” Doak said. “I feel like we had performances in the past few matches that deserved wins we didn’t get so I’m just glad we got the three points.
“I don’t really take too much notice [of personal plaudits]. I just try and do my best for the team and do what I’m good at. If one of my actions leads to winning the game then that’s great but we’ve got a team who’ve got quality and are really experienced and know what they are doing.
“If it comes through me then great, if it comes from one of the other lads then also great.”
The Liverpool player, who is enjoying a loan spell in the Championship with Middlesbrough, was unaffected by coming up against Champions League winning players and top-level talents, saying he doesn’t even notice the individuals when he’s in the thick of the action.
“Before the game there was a bit of butterflies but once I get on the pitch I don’t see names or faces,” he said. “I just see another team there to beat us so we need to try and beat them.
“When I’m on the ball, I don’t notice who I am against. It’s just a kit. I just try my best.”
Doak received a loud ovation by the Tartan Army when he came off after 90 minutes but said he was just happy to have made a difference in the game.
“I thought they did that for every sub,” he said.
“It’s nice getting a round of applause but I don’t really look too much into that. If it was a wee bit extra then I really appreciate the support from all the fans.”
