Dwight Gayle has revealed that he intends to return to watch Hibs in European competition after he plays what is expected to be his final game for the club.
The 35-year-old forward said earlier this season that he was minded to retire at the end of the campaign, and ahead of Saturday’s final game against Rangers, he was asked if the team’s recent form and European qualification had changed his mind on hanging up his boots.
“No, it’s not,” he said. “I’m going to come to the games, hopefully. I’ve spoken to a few people about coming with my little man and hopefully bringing him to some of the games abroad, which I’m really excited about, but I’m still fixated on retiring and getting back to my family.
“The most important thing for me is my family and spending time with them. I think, while they’re young, it’s really important that I do that.”
Hibernian has been the last stop in a career that saw the forward rise from the lower leagues in England to play for Crystal Palace and Newcastle United, among others.
Gayle said he felt a sense of pride in having helped deliver a satisfying end to the season, allowing supporters to start planning travel to the continent next season.
“I’m absolutely buzzing for the club and to be involved in a team that’s been able to get that opportunity and give that to the fans,” he said. “To hopefully have the group stages to look forward to. It brings me nothing but pride to be a part of that.”
Before that, the final game against Rangers, and dreams of one final goal before hanging up his boots.
“It would be really nice for me to score, but ultimately it’s about the team’s result,” he said.
“Regardless of who gets the goals for us, I’m sure we’ll all be buzzing if we’ve got the three points and can walk around the pitch and celebrate with the fans together.”
