Hibernian have stated that a remark made by one of their supporters during a match against Dundee United was racist following an investigation.

A shout from the away end at Tannadice could be heard in a clip that was widely shared on social media.

The incident took place during the match between Dundee United and Hibernian on Tuesday, October 11.

The clubs initially believed that the shout was “derogatory rather than racial” following an early investigation.

However, in a statement issued on Tuesday evening, Hibernian confirmed that it had been a racial comment.

It was determined to be so after audio from the incident was sent to an independent audio forensic expert.

Hibernian said that the club has a “zero-tolerance approach” on all kinds of racist and discriminatory abuse, which it described as “completely abhorrent” behaviour.

“It has no place at Hibs, in the game, or in wider society”, the club stated.

Supporters have been asked to come forward by Hibernian if they witnessed the incident.

The club has said that if the individual is identified, they will face the “strongest action” from the club.

The statement concluded: “Hibernian FC is proud to have players, staff and supporters from a number of different backgrounds and cultures, and will continue to work alongside all other clubs up and down the country to ensure that all forms of discrimination are kicked out of the game.”
