Celtic manager Neil Lennon has revealed that defender Hatem Abd Elhamed is set to leave the club to return to Israel.

The international player is poised to agree a return to Hapoel Be’er Sheva, the club he left to join Celtic in 2019.

Lennon revealed that Elhamed was keen on the move for family reasons, having been alone in Scotland through the pandemic.

“He’s been going through a really difficult time,” the Celtic boss said. “His wife and son are back in Israel and he’s been here on his own.

“He’s really struggled with life away from the training ground and stadium.

“We’ve got to take into account the human factor. I wouldn’t say he was suffering from depression but he was very, very low.

“He was struggling with life away from home and I think we’ve made the right decision and it’s the best for him and the club.”
