Glasgow Warriors will face Edinburgh at Scottish football’s national stadium Hampden Park in December.

The decision to choose Hampden as the venue for the opening leg of the 1872 Cup has been described as an “unprecedented move for rugby in Glasgow and the west of Scotland”.

It will be the first time in the club’s professional history that the Warriors will run out at the stadium in Mount Florida. The match will take place on Sunday, December 22, at 3pm.

The game is part of the United Rugby Championship and will see the annually contested 1872 cup match take place in Glasgow.

Al Kellock, Glasgow Warriors managing director: “I came in August time and met Iain Maxwell, had a great conversation about the ambition to bring a big game here.

“He was very supportive and the SFA have been brilliant, they really have.

“So as far as the decision making process, it’s been two or three months, I’m delighted to be here and announcing it.

“Now it’s about putting on a great event as we possibly can.”

He added: “We don’t want it to be a one off.

“I think there’s opportunities and you look at what other teams have done as far as not just derby matches, but potentially European matches or playoff matches, and URC.

“You approve the concept and then go from there.”

Tickets will go on general sale on Friday, October 25 at 10am.
