Glasgow City Council has launched an “emergency motion” to celebrate a historic win by one of the city’s rugby teams.

The Scottish side landed the United Rugby Championship trophy for the first time since 2015 after a hard-fought 21-16 victory over the Bulls at a sold-out Loftus Versfeld, in South Africa on Saturday.

Having beaten the Stormers, the 2022 winners, and defending champions Munster to reach the Grand Final, the Warriors avoided a third loss in the showpiece with a fantastic performance.

To celebrate the win, the Warriors hosted an event on Tuesday that gave fans a chance to see the trophy in person and speak with their heroes as they did a lap of honour.

Managing director, Alastair Kellock, told STV News that now they had a trophy it needs to be in schools “inspiring the next generation”.

“We’ve got a bunch of guys who, rightly so, are going to be heroes and we’re ready to make as much noise about it as possible.”

Now the celebrations are set to continue with the Lord Provost, Jacqueline McLaren, offering the Glasgow Warriors a civic reception in recognition of success.

The Lord Provost said: “Naturally, I’m thrilled at the Warriors win and keen the city marks their remarkable achievement in South Africa.

“It’s an incredible result that Glasgow and Scotland can take great pride in.”

The Lord Provost’s plans for a congratulatory civic reception in honour of the rugby team were revealed following an emergency motion, tabled by Councillor Chris Cunningham and seconded by Bailie Ann Jenkins, praising the team at today’s council meeting.

While making the motion, the council said it considers the team’s win “one of the greatest achievements not only in Glasgow Warriors history, but also in the history of Scottish Rugby”.

“Glasgow City Council celebrates the achievement of the Glasgow Warriors who won the United Rugby Championship title at the weekend for the first time since 2015.

“The Warriors beat the Bulls 21-16 away from home in Pretoria after coming back from a 13-0 deficit after 40 minutes.

It continued: “Council agrees to ask the Lord Provost to host a Civic Reception to celebrate this historic achievement.

“Council acknowledges and extends its heartfelt gratitude to the Glasgow Warriors for their continuous and invaluable contributions to the local community.

“The team’s dedication to various outreach programmes, youth development initiatives and charitable activities has had a significant impact on the lives of many Glaswegians.

“Their commitment to fostering a sense of community, promoting healthy lifestyles, and inspiring the next generation of rugby players cannot be underestimated.

“Council commends Glasgow Warriors for their efforts both on and off the field and look forward to their continued success and continued involvement in inspiring the community.”
