Steven Gerrard believes his Rangers side's 2-1 victory over Celtic is a huge moment for the team and feels like the biggest victory in his managerial career.

Goals from Ryan Kent and Nikola Katic sealed a 2-1 win and narrowed the gap at the top to just two points, with Rangers holding a game in hand over their city rivals.

Gerrard said he felt there was plenty of cause to celebrate after a first win at Celtic park since October 2010.

"I'm emotional and you could see that in my reaction after the game," he said.

"It's a big moment for the team and the club because it's been through too much pain here. Too many defeats and setbacks and knocks.

"It's a big win, a huge win, because we've come here and dominated against a very good team, a successful team, a team that we've got respect for because of what they have achieved.

"I'm so proud and pleased of the performance that the players put in."

The win comes after Rangers suffered the pain of losing to Celtic in the League Cup final but Gerrard said that the Hampden final had actually helped with his side's confidence.

"Celtic took a trophy away from us a couple of weeks ago in a game that we dominated," he said.

"We came away with huge belief from that game because it felt different. It didn't feel like we were too down over it because we were so pleased with the performance and how it looked.

"That's the reason why we've come here and taken the game to Celtic."

And asked if Sunday's win was the biggest since he began his managerial career by taking the reins at Ibrox in 2018, he said: "It feels the best right now.

"But I don't want to take anything away from the fact that we have just came out a Champions League level (Europa League) group to qualify for the last-32.

"Celtic are a fantastic team, you only have to look at the recent years and what they have achieved.

"They have serial winners in the team. This is a big challenge for me and all the players but we are doing everything we can to take the challenge to them."

The one downside for Rangers was the sending off of Alfredo Morelos when he picked up a second yellow card.

"We have no complaints on it," said Gerrard. "He was a handful again for the whole game, he did some incredible stuff.

"His emotions got the better of him at the end of the game but I think that frustration might have come from the fact that (Christopher) Jullien never got a straight red card moments before it because it is a clear foul on the edge of the box."
