Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is keen to sign Aberdeen’s Scott Wright this month, rather than wait until summer, and says bringing the attacker to Ibrox early would be “a bonus”.

The Glasgow side informed the Dons earlier this week that they were opening talks with Wright over a pre-contract agreement, with the 23-year-old now in the last six months of his existing deal at Pittodrie.

Gerrard said that the focus is on making sure Wright signs for next season but that work is being done to hasten the move if all parties are happy.

“What we’re keen to do is do everything right and be respectful to Aberdeen and Derek and Scott as well,” he said.

“Things are progressing well in terms of trying to get it all tied up for next season.

“I had a conversation after our game, which I thought was the right time to do it. We didn’t want it to interfere with either side’s preparations going into that game.

“If it can be done in this window then that would be a bonus and a boost to us. Having said that, we want to be respectful to the opposition and Scott himself.

“I need to leave that now to the people above me: the Rangers board and the Aberdeen board will talk. If something can be done then great, if not then the priority is to get it tied up for next season.”

The Rangers boss said that the club were open to the idea of a player moving from Ibrox to Pittodrie to seal the deal. Gerrard also believes the club hierarchy might agree to let Ross McCrorie, who is on loan at Pittodrie and will make a permanent move to the Dons this summer, complete a transfer now.

“Boards talk and the money men will talk,” he said. “I am sure in the conversation they’ll have everything on the table in terms of possibilities to try and get this done in the coming weeks.

“There’s different options. There’s the possibility of maybe one of our players going the other way. There’s the possibility of cash up front. I don’t know where the Ross McCrorie deal lies in terms of what needs to be done but I’m sure that’s another possibility.

“But the main thing is to do things properly.

“If a deal can be done now, great, and if not we will have to be patient but we are extremely close to having it done for the summer.”
