Flynn McKay is the centre of attention at Fraserburgh Academy as he prepares for a trip to face Rangers in the Scottish Cup but he has not managed to negotiate a free pass on his weekend homework.

The 17-year-old will be in the squad to take on Philippe Clement’s side at Ibrox in a tie that has captured the imagination of the town and his school.

The sixth-year pupil said: “All the teachers come up and ask, ‘How are you feeling?’ They’re also really excited, but also the school kids, the younger ones coming up to me asking for photos and signatures and all that, so it’s quite hectic at school.

“There’s a lot of people talking about it, the whole school’s just, there’s just a bit of a buzz in the place, especially this week, but ever since we got drawn against Rangers. It just lifted up the spirits and everyone is excited for the day.”

When asked about a homework reprieve for the weekend, he said: “No, the teachers still expect me to do it, even if it’s on the bus on the way up for the way home, they’ll still expect me to do my work.”

The whole town is excited for Fraserburgh’s second Scottish Cup meeting with Rangers – they lost 3-0 at home in 2018.

“I’ve got quite a lot of my family and friends coming down,” McKay said. “A couple of them are Rangers supporters as well, my granddad and uncle, big Rangers supporters, so it’ll be difficult to hear who they’re going to support.

“If I was lucky enough to get on the pitch, it’s the stuff you dream of when you’re a kid growing up, playing football, playing at stadiums like that, against the calibre of players you’re going up against, so it would just be the stuff of dreams.”

The Scotland Under-18s schoolboy international has already fulfilled the dream of many of his peers.

“We played England at Chesterfield’s stadium and I was lucky enough to score as well, so it was a good day that day,” he said.
