Could Footgolf be Scotland’s next chance at world domination?

Three Scottish teams are heading to Orlando for the Footgolf World Cup next week.

Forget the football or Rugby World Cup – Scotland’s next chance at world domination comes in the form of a sport far more obscure… footgolf.

The hybrid game between golf and football is on the rise in Scotland.

Now, we have three teams ready to head to Orlando looking for World Cup glory.

Scotland men’s, women’s and senior team are looking to bring silverware home as they head to the tournament next week.

Women’s player Carolyn Kent told STV News: “I always say to people it’s basically the same rules of golf, you’re on a golf course but there’s a larger hole and we use a football.

“It’s a lot of fun. I’ve brought people out who have never played before, I’ve brought experienced players and everyone just has a good time.

“It really kicked off during Covid, that’s when we started the association. That allowed people to get out when we couldn’t.

“Everyone who has a go enjoys it but are surprised by just how difficult it is.”

Although it may be difficult, the team fancy their chances in the States.

Carolyn Kent said she is 'excited' to head Stateside for tournament

Carolyn added: “We are off to the world cup in Orlando – there are 1,000 players, 40 teams and it’s going to be a massive event.

“It’s also the first time the women’s and senior’s teams are also competing alongside the men so we are all excited and hoping to compete.”

The sport is continuing to grow in Scotland with eight clubs established across the country and hundreds of players already taking up the game.

President of the Footgolf Association of Scotland Neil Shave said: “What’s fantastic about this sport as well is that it is so inclusive.

“It’s so easy for people to come out, there’s no need to spend hundreds of pounds on equipment, it’s literally a football and get yourself out on the course.

“You also have different genders and different ages groups all mixing on the course, it really is fantastic.

“I continue to see it grow at the rate it is.

“Our association which is only three years old has double, even tripled in size and I honestly believe the sky is the limit.”

The Footgolf World Cup takes place in Orlando from May 27 to June 6.
