A football player has been diagnosed with a blood clot in his lungs after suffering a foot injury.

Scottish League One side East Fife confirmed Jess Norey will miss the remainder of the season after being put on blood-thinning medication for the next six months.

The 24-year-old was taken to hospital in Kirkcaldy after falling ill following East Fife’s clash with Hamilton last week, where it was thought he had passed a kidney stone.

After feeling “severe discomfort” following a training session on Thursday, a CT scan revealed the midfielder had a pulmonary embolism.

It is a life-threatening condition where a blood clot travels to and blocks an artery in the lung.

He had just returned to fitness following ten weeks on the sidelines with a foot injury.

Norey has returned to his family home in London to rest and recuperate, the club said.

The player told the club’s website: “The doctors asked me if I had recently suffered any injuries or trauma in my leg.

“It is possible that having to wear a moon boot for several weeks because of my injury has restricted circulation, causing a blood clot in my leg, which travelled up to the lung.

“It is frustrating because I has just got back in the team and I felt that I had done well in the match against Cove, but now I am out again.”

The NHS says that following application of a surgical boot there is a small risk of developing a blood clot in the leg – a deep vein thrombosis – DVT.

A post on X from Arbroath FC said: “All at Arbroath FC send our best wishes to former Lichtie Jess Norey after suffering a pulmonary embolism last week.

“Everyone at the club wishes Jess a speedy return to football as he starts his recovery process.”
