Three-quarters of players back reconstruction in PFA survey

In a poll canvassing the opinion of 692 union members, just over 75% said the current structure should change.

Three-quarters of footballers who responded to a PFA Scotland survey have given league reconstruction their backing.

In a poll canvassing the opinion of 692 members, just over 75% said the current structure should change, while 24.71% claimed it should remain the same.

A total of 536 players then said reconstruction should take place for next season, while 126 said it should be done for 2021/22.

A vast majority favour permanent reconstruction (75.98%) and an overall 60% preferred a form of the 14-14-14 set-up.

PFA Scotland chairman Liam Craig, a midfielder for St Johnstone. said: “Everyone seems to have a view on league reconstruction, from our own clubs to supporters and the media.

“However, it is vitally important that the player’s voice is heard. That is why we asked PFA Scotland to put this survey out to our members so we can get their opinion on the possible restructuring of the leagues we play in.

“It is the future of the game we play that is being debated, and we feel strongly that our opinion should be taken in to consideration.”

The Premiership, Championship, League 1 and League 2 were all represented in the survey, with 63.52% of respondents saying they do not feel consulted enough on issues, such as reconstruction, which affect them.

Fraser Wishart, PFA Scotland chief executive, added: “While it is the governing bodies who make the decisions, players opinions seem to be largely overlooked.

“People tend to forget that players are at the heart of the game, it is their job and they care passionately about it. These results show that beyond doubt.”

The findings of the survey will be presented to the SPFL’s Working Group on League Reconstruction.
