Rohl: 'Difficult to understand' why Trusty wasn't sent off in semi-final

The Celtic defender was booked after catching Jack Butland in the head with a trailing foot at Hampden Park on Sunday.

Rangers head coach Danny Rohl says it is “difficult to understand” why Auston Trusty wasn’t sent off for his foul on Jack Butland in the League Cup semi-final.

The Celtic defender caught the goalkeeper in the head with a trailing foot at the end of the first half at Hampden Park on Sunday.

Referee Nick Walsh booked the American for the incident, but Rangers, who had already been reduced to ten men, believe he should have been shown a red card.

The Ibrox club asked the SFA for clarification on the decision; however, in a statement released on Monday, they revealed they weren’t satisfied with the explanation given.

As he prepares his side for their Europa League clash with AS Roma on Thursday, Rohl admitted the decision was hard to get his head around.

He said: “We spoke about two situations, the handball (by Anthony Ralston) that wasn’t a second yellow card, and then there was the kick against the head of Jack (Butland).

“You always have two sides, the referee decides, and they are always looking for the rules, and we have our side on how we see something.

“If there is a kick against a head, then you have to be really careful what you are doing there.

“So, for me, that decision is difficult to understand; it shouldn’t matter if it is from the side or at the front, a kick to the head is always dangerous because you could get an injury.

“That one is more difficult, for handball, there are so many different rules, is it this angle, was it that angle, but that tackle (on Butland) was hard to understand.

“We got a red card, and the opponent never. We tried our best after that, and you have to say that despite being a man down, we got the draw after 90 minutes.

“But, of course, that was still not enough on the day.”
