Rohl says consistency is key as Rangers look to close gap at top

Rangers take on league leaders Hearts at Tynecastle this weekend with a chance to cut the gap to six points with a game in hand.

Danny Rohl urged his Rangers side to continue their Premiership rehabilitation when they take on leaders Hearts at Tynecastle on Sunday.

When the German head coach took over from Russell Martin in October, the Light Blues were in turmoil, eighth in the league with one win in seven.

Although the Europa League has proved too high a level for the Ibrox side under Rohl, the Gers have moved into third place in the domestic league with six wins and two draws in eight games and are nine points behind the Jambos with a game in hand.

“We have to take the points consistently, otherwise you destroy all the good work. I think this is crucial to continue our way,” said the former Sheffield Wednesday boss, who revealed his quest to boost the squad in January is well under way.

“I see at the moment that the team is really able to get points in this competition. Our opponents, they are also on good runs in the league, they’ve taken a lot of points.

“From this point on we have to keep working hard, nobody will give us a present. But I’m very positive at the minute how we go, what we can improve.

“This was the topic also after the Hibs game (1-0 win on Monday), that we have still parts where we are not in the best, but even at the moment we take points. I think this is a good fundamental.

“I think then, with a win on Sunday, we will be just six points behind them, one more game in hand. If you take this then it could be three and then the situation will change from when I arrived to now.

“But we know there’s still a long way to go, still a lot of games to play.

“I think my team feel it now, you feel the confidence. I think the win on Monday was a big one for us, it was a good start in a busy schedule.

“The next six games are crucial until the (Scottish) cup game and then we’ll know exactly where we are.

“We have made the first steps so far and now it’s about making the next step.”

Rohl is working with the club’s new football consultant and advisor, Stig Inge Bjornebye, to bolster his options in January.

The Gers boss said: “The wishes are to get a lot of players in on the first of January.

“But I think in this window will be about timing, that’s the first part, and the second thing is preparation. We’re trying to prepare some things now.

“We have talks with agents, with maybe potential players, ongoing conversations, but I think this is normal.

“This is a normal process. But the most important key is that I have a good conversation with my recruitment team and with my guys around me.

“Then we’ll make sure that we find the right players.”
