Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack has revealed that he expects the club to make two or three more signings before the end of the transfer window.
It’s already been a busy summer at Pittodrie as the Scottish Cup winners prepare to challenge for domestic silverware as well as deal with the demands of League Phase football in Europe this season.
Marko Lazetic is the latest signing after joining from AC Milan and he follows Nick Suman, Emmanuel Gyamfi, Kusini Yengi, Kjartan Mar Kjartansson, Nicolas Milanovic, Adil Aouchiche, Alfie Dorrington and Kenan Bilalovice in committing to the Dons.
Though a good number of players left at the end of last season’s rollercoaster campaign, it still represents a significant outlay on players and Cormack says the board aren’t done yet.
“We’ve set ourselves a plan,” the chairman told STV. “Myself and my friends in the investor group just put another £8m into the club.
“That brings the investment over eight years to about £25m.
“We’re going to aim to put together the best squad that we can.
“We thought we might be going for six or seven players and I think we’re already past our eighth. I would hope we could bring another two or three in by the end of the window.”
The challenge now is for manager Jimmy Thelin to guide that squad to success in his second season after delivering silverware against the odds last time. Cormack has been nothing but impressed by a man he says chose the Dons over clubs in the English championship and who has a track record of building winning teams over time.
“I’m quite relaxed because I trust him,” the Aberdeen chairman said. “He’s enjoying the city and working with the people at the club.
“He’s a people person and he is very competitive.
“Jimmy is very calm and collected. He doesn’t believe you have to scream and shout to get the best out of players, and thinks that if you have to do that then you’ve got the wrong players.
“You have to be self-motivated and if you aren’t self-motivated, you won’t play.”
The immediate challenge for the Swede is to guide Aberdeen past FCSB and into the Europe League, though the consolation of a Conference League place awaits the loser.
Cormack has travelled from his home in America for the first leg at Pittodrie on Thursday and is anticipating an exciting night.
“We love our European football at Aberdeen and those huge games,” he said. “It’s a huge opportunity for us to progress.
“And obviously another £2m or £3m would be helpful.
“It’ll be pretty much a sell-out and the atmosphere… I believe the Steaua Bucharest ultras are coming but our boys will certainly drown them out.
“It’s always exciting to play teams from across Europe.”
