Elgin City have admitted bringing an ineligible player off the bench in their 0-0 League Cup draw with Ayr United at the weekend.
Darryl McHardy played around an hour of the game after coming on in the first half despite being under a one match suspension.
Ayr United went on to win the fixture on penalties meaning they took two points from the game with the visitors only getting one.
Under group stage rules both teams get a point for a draw but the game then also goes to a penalties with an extra point up for grabs.
However, Ayr could now be awarded all three points with Elgin having their point deducted at a disciplinary hearing set for Thursday after they were charged with breaching SPFL rules.
Annan Athletic beat Queen of the South 3-2 in the other game in Group F meaning Ayr could now go top if they are awarded a 3-0 victory and Elgin will drop to bottom of the five team group that also includes Premiership side St Johnstone who have yet to play.
