Eilish McColgan enjoys family affair after Great Scottish Run triumph

The Scot set a British record on her return to Glasgow.

Eilish McColgan says that having her granny witness a civic reception in her honour made her day after a record-breaking Great Scottish Run victory.

The long-distance athlete was running outdoors in Scotland for the first time since the Commonwealth Games in 2014 and she finished off the season in style in Glasgow with an impressive 10k win.

McColgan ran a personal best and British record time of 30:18, finishing ahead of Lesley Bell and Ruth Joss.

The triple Olympian won four medals across the Commonwealth Games and European Championships earlier this year, and has also set British records over 5k, 10k and the half-marathon.

After her success in Glasgow, she was guest of honour at a civic reception in Dundee on Sunday and she said that celebrating her achievements with family was a moment to rmember.

She told STV: “I think it’s really special for my family as well, especially since I’ve got my wee granny here today.

“She was obviously there when my mum won gold in Edinburgh in ‘86 and she wasn’t in Birmingham [for the Commonwealth Games in August]. Unfortunately she’s a little too old to get down there.

“So for her to be here today with us, see my medals for the first time, be part of this sort of welcome home ceremony, that to me is the really special part.

“And going out and seeing that more people turned up than I imagined would turn up. It’s an honor to be here.”

McColgan’s run in Glasgow was initially announced as a European record but apparently has not yet been rubber-stamped with some criteria still to be met.

“It was definitely a PB, definitely a British record,” she said. “There’s a little bit of uncertainty whether it will be a European record.

“I think the current one perhaps didn’t have drug testing to ratify it. I’m not too sure.

“There’s some reason it’s not been ratified yet. So I’ll just do everything I can to tick all the boxes, make sure we do it right.

“So I’ve got to go back to Glasgow tonight, a drug test and it’d be great if that could be ratified.”
