Jim Goodwin admitted his disjointed Dundee United side got what they deserved after they began their season with a demoralising 2-0 Premier Sports Cup group-stage defeat at Championship side Falkirk.
The Premiership outfit were booed off by their supporters after going down to second-half goals from Bairns pair Dylan Tait and Ross MacIver.
“We simply weren’t good enough in every department, really,” manager Goodwin told United TV.
“Back through to middle and at the top end of the pitch, we looked second best in pretty much every area over the majority of the game and we got punished for it.
“It’s an extremely frustrating afternoon because after all the hard work that the players and staff have put in over the last four weeks, you want to show that to the supporters who travelled through here in great numbers and unfortunately we never did that.”
Goodwin conceded the performance from his team highlighted that they still have plenty of work to do ahead of their Premiership return in three weeks.
“I don’t want to stand here and make excuses but it is a new group and we’re trying to get used to a new system.
“I just thought Falkirk were the better team on the day. It was a real reality check in terms of where we need to get to in terms of fitness levels and quality on the ball.
“And we’ve still got a bit of work to do in terms of recruitment. We need to get better in every single department.”
