Doohan 'buzzing' to get going after 'dream' return to Celtic

The return to Parkhead seals a whirlwind month for the goalkeeper following Scottish Cup success and international recognition.

Ross Doohan admits it was always his dream to return to Celtic one day and is “buzzing” to get another chance at his boyhood club.

The 27-year-old goalkeeper left Parkhead for pastures new three years ago and played for Tranmere, Forest Green, and Aberdeen before clinching a move back to the east end of Glasgow by signing a three-year deal last week.

He first signed for the Hoops as a 12-year-old schoolboy in 2010 and remained at the club for 12 years, turning professional in 2015.

However, he struggled for game time at the Scottish champions, making just four first-team appearances and having numerous loan spells away to Greenock Morton, Ayr United, and Ross County.

His return caps a whirlwind month in which he won a Scottish Cup medal with Aberdeen and earned his first Scotland cap in a win over Liechtenstein.

Doohan realises he has a fight on his hands to displace the likes of Kasper Schmeichel and Viljami Sinisalo, but insists he isn’t back at Celtic Park just to make up the numbers.

He said: “I feel like I grew up here, basically. I was here from when I was 12 up until I left just a few years ago. I moved school for the club and went full-time here.

“I spent most of my life at this club, so obviously I still have a major attachment here and I’m buzzing to be back.

“Coming back here was always the dream, to come back here to play and be part of this club again.

“I knew at the time when I left that it was probably the right thing to do, to get some game time, gain more experience, and mature as an individual.

“It was always my hope to be able to come back and I’m absolutely buzzing to be here again.

“It’s going to be difficult (to get game time) as there are two top goalkeepers here already and I’m excited to get working with them, and to work with Woodsy again as I know he is a top goalkeeping coach.

“I am ready to come here and work as hard as I can, put myself out there and hopefully push my way into the team.

“I am going to work as hard as I can to get in there. I back myself, I have got my foot back in the door now, so I just need to show everyone what I can do and knock on the door to get in the team.”
