Danny Wilson is to take over as Glasgow Warriors head coach on Monday, a month sooner than planned.

Wilson, who has been working as Scotland’s forwards coach, is replacing Dave Rennie as the New Zealander takes charge of the Australian national team.

The transition has been fast-tracked to give both coaches extra preparation time ahead of the return of rugby following lockdown.

Warriors hope the early succession will mean Wilson can “be ready for when rugby returns”, with the Pro14 hopeful of resuming in August.

Departing Warriors boss Rennie said: “With no rugby to be played in the next few weeks, it makes sense for Danny to take charge now.

“The original plan was for Danny to immerse himself in the club after the Six Nations to assist with the transition, but that obviously hasn’t been possible.

“I’ve been impressed with Danny. He has used the past couple of months well, spoken a lot to staff and players and is in a position to put his stamp on things. I know he’ll do a great job.”
