Craig Levein steadfastly refused to be drawn on how St Johnstone are dealing with midfielder Cammy MacPherson’s decision to repost a video by far-right activist Tommy Robinson.

Screenshots emerged this week showing that MacPherson shared a controversial video documentary by the former English Defence League leader, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, on the X social media platform.

The 25-year-old former St Mirren player subsequently cancelled the repost, but – at a time when towns and cities across England and Northern Ireland have been plagued by violent unrest involving far-right groups – MacPherson’s actions have angered many of his club’s supporters.

Saints are understood to be dealing with the matter internally but manager Levein was in no mood to discuss it in his pre-match media briefing on Friday morning ahead of Sunday’s William Hill Premiership trip to Kilmarnock.

Asked if he could provide any information on the club’s stance, Levein said: “No.”

Probed on how long any club investigation might take, he responded: “I’ve no idea.”

Asked whether MacPherson would be in the squad on Sunday, Levein said: “I’m not commenting on the situation. I don’t want to talk about it. Apologies, but that’s my approach this morning. I don’t want to get into it.”

Levein expressed sympathy for Saints defender Sam McClelland who is facing a lengthy lay-off after rupturing his Achilles in Monday’s 2-1 defeat at home to Aberdeen.

“It’s disappointing for me, but having had loads of injuries in my own career, I know just how devastating it can be to be out for a lengthy period of time,” he said. “Knowing what Sam faces, I feel sorry for him.

“I just hope his recovery is good and he can get back playing in the fullness of time. It’s a really difficult situation for him. He’s snapped his Achilles. Some players recover quicker than others for some reason – I don’t know why – so it’s difficult to guess how long he’s going to be out.”

Levein also offered a transfer window update.

“I still think there’s movement to take place,” he said.

“Some players will go out and there’s a chance we’ll bring one or two more in. We’re working on some stuff just now.”
