Steve Clarke has called Connor Barron and Josh Mulligan into his Scotland squad ahead of Sunday’s World Cup qualifier against Belarus.
Yellow cards for Lewis Ferguson and Ryan Christie in Thursday’s 3-1 win over Greece mean both will serve a one-match suspension for the game at Hampden, forcing Clarke to bring in reinforcements to increase his midfield options.
Hibs midfielder Mulligan has been called up to the international squad for the first time after impressing with the Easter Road side, while Barron will hope to add to the cap he earned as a substitute in the 4-0 win over Liechtenstein in June.
The Scottish FA has also confirmed that full-back Aaron Hickey will miss the match after suffering injury against Greece.
Speaking at his pre-match media conference, Clarke was hopeful that the issue was “minor” and not a concern for a player who has endured serious injury problems in the past.
“He went back down to London (on Saturday night), so we had a chance to have a chat during the day.
“He said he was much better. He’s in a much better place than he was when he came off.
“He’s definitely due a bit of luck. Fingers crossed it’s just something minor. I’m pretty sure it is.”
Scotland are aiming to build on a strong start to qualifying when they face Belarus. Thursday’s comeback win leaves the national team sitting in second place on goal difference at the halfway stage of the short campaign.
Following Sunday’s match, Clarke’s side have a trip to Greece and a home match against group leaders Denmark next month as they bid to reach a World Cup finals for the first time since 1998.
