Commonwealth Games model says racist comments on opening ceremony outfit posts 'impacted mental health'

A second model who was subjected to racial abuse after showcasing Scotland’s opening ceremony outfits for the Commonwealth Games has spoken out on the impact to her mental health.

Earlier this week, Scottish models Adam and Victoria faced racial abuse after the unveiling, with dozens of comments made on social media posts.

The official body of the Commonwealth Games condemned the “abhorrent online abuse”, while model Adam said he did not expect the level of “blatant hate and racism” and had been left “truly disappointed”.

Fellow model Victoria has also spoken out on the ordeal, posting a statement in a series of slides in an Instagram post.

“My existence as a 21-year-old mixed race female should never be used as a trigger to spout disgusting, horrible rhetoric,” the post read.

“It is so disappointing to see how people have used a proud and exciting moment for Team Scotland and its athletes as propaganda to spread racist, bigoted views.”

The post was accompanied by an image of Victoria and Adam modelling the opening ceremony outfits, with racist comments overlaid on top.

The post continued: “To personally attack a young female over a keyboard and knowingly post such hateful comments uses the right to freedom of speech in the most evil, cowardly way possible.

“I’ve seen abuse like this online, yet I never expected to personally experience it myself and suffer the effects it has on mental health.

“This just reveals a wider issue that is still so underaddressed in our society. Racism still very clearly exisits and will continue to do so.

“Change must be made. Racism is never okay.”
