Chris Cadden is likely to be missing until next year after undergoing surgery on his Achilles tendon.
The 26-year-old was stretchered off in the 81st minute of Hibernian’s 1-1 draw with Heart of Midlothian and has been ruled out by the club “for a significant period of time”.
Manager Lee Johnson told the official Hibs website: “Everyone is devastated for ‘Cadds’ and I know he will be going through a difficult time.
“But as staff and players we have to rally around him and give him as much support as possible.
“We have a first-class medical department at the club that will help him through his recovery and ensure he comes back fitter and stronger.”
Cadden began his career at Motherwell where he made 139 appearances and broke into the Scotland squad, earning two caps on the 2018 tour of South America.
He moved to Major League Soccer side Columbus Crew in 2019 and also spent time on loan at Oxford United.
Cadden moved to Hibs for an undisclosed fee in January 2021 and has gone on to play 88 times for the capital men, netting four goals.
Meanwhile fellow Easter Road player Jake Doyle-Hayes damaged his shoulder in the Edinburgh derby but is expected to be fit for the start of the new season.
Lee Johnson said: “Unfortunately, it looks like [Jake] will miss the start of pre-season but we know how determined he is to return as quickly as possible, so he can have a big impact for us next season.”
