Celtic have been knocked out of the Champions League in heartbreaking fashion after Bayern Munich scored in injury time to win their play-off tie 3-2 on aggregate.
The Scottish champions put in a fine performance, and a second-half goal from Nicolas Kuhn looked like taking the tie to extra time in the Allianz Arena.
Deep into injury time, Alphonso Davies made it 1-1 on the night and 3-2 over two legs, leaving Celtic to reflect on a fine performance but a cruel exit from the elite competition.
Celtic had looked like they may be in for a long night when Bayern went close in the first five minutes of the match in Munich, with Serge Gnabry getting a header on target but Alistair Johnston getting across to block the goal-bound effort.
But it was the visitors who then created the better chances. Callum McGregor shot over the bar from an angle in a real statement of intent and Celtic then created another golden opportunity.
Jota opened up space for himself on the left and his cross found Nicolas Kuhn unmarked. The former Bayern youth player set himself and knocked the ball past Manuel Neuer but Raphael Guerreiro was on hand to clear off the line.
Harry Kane, who had been an injury doubt ahead of the game, tested Kasper Schmeichel and Josh Kimmich shot wide when he should have hit the target but Celtic continued to defend manfully and get on the front foot whenever they could.
Bayern came closest to opening the scoring when Kane clipped the bar as the clock neared halftime, but neither side found a breakthrough before the interval.
The shot against the woodwork proved to be the English striker’s last contribution as he didn’t come out for the second half, and Kingsley Coman can on to replace him.
Schmeichel was called upon to come off his line and block Leon Goretzka’s shot early in the second period but Celtic settled quickly and continued to strike a balance between containing their opponents and searching for the goal that would level the tie.
Just after the hour mark, the visitors got what they wanted. Daizen Maeda chased down one loose ball, then another, putting Bayern on the back foot.
Kim Min-jae failed to clear and Nicolas Kuhn punished the mistake, collecting the ball and steadying himself before guiding a low shot past Neuer and into the bottom corner.

Bayern were rocked and immediately made a double change, replacing Guerreiro and Gnabry with Leroy Sane and Alphonso Davies.
Celtic had already brought Adam Idah on for Jota after the winger took a ball to the face, and goalscorer Kuhn was then replaced by Yang as the visitors looked to push for another.
Bayern soon regrouped and had two good chances to regain the lead in the tie. Goretzka got on the end of a Kimmich free-lick but steered his header just wide of the post, and soon after Sane snapped a powerful shot past the upright with Schmeichel looking beaten.
The Celtic goalkeeper then faced a free-kick from just outside the box and after the wall blocked Olise’s initial effort he had to make an acrobatic save to keep out Kimmich’s deflected shot.
The hosts forced a series of corners as the clock ticked down but Celtic stayed organised and gave little away as they looked to take the tie to extra time at least.
But a heartbreaking late goal ended their hopes. A ball into the box forced Schmeichel to make a terrific save from Sane’s header but Davies pounced on the rebound to divert Cameron Carter-Vicker’s attempted clearance into the net with the final chance of the game.
