Cameron Carter Vickers insists Martin O’Neill has the backing of the Celtic squad amid calls for him to quit.

Celtic lost their second Old Firm derby in seven days with a 1-0 defeat to Rangers at Celtic Park on Sunday.

The pressure has ramped up on the Hoops boss in recent weeks after their Champions League elimination to LASK, before the defeat to Rangers in the Premier Sports Cup quarter-final, as well as the midweek loss to Ferencvaros in their Europa League opener.

Despite a third straight defeat, the Celtic defender claims the squad are “still behind” their under-fire manager, saying: “All I can say is as players, we are behind the manager and behind the management team.

“I think what he achieved last year was unbelievable and as a playing group we are grateful to him for that, so we’re still behind him, and we’re going to do our best for him.”

The Celtic support let their feelings be known at the end of their latest defeat on Sunday as boos rang around the stadium and the Hoops centre-back concedes he understands the fans’ displeasure.

The USA international said: “100% I do. At the end of the day, this is a results-based business and our results haven’t been good enough.

“So I completely understand it from a fan’s point of view, but again, it’s about us. It’s players and the coaching staff really nailing down what we want to be as a team and just working towards that day in and day out.”
