Celtic’s new signing Alexandro Bernabei will not have to serve a ban at the start of the league season, STV understands.

The Argentine left-back completed his move to Celtic Park earlier this month in a £3.75m deal, joining Ange Postecoglou’s side as they prepare for a title defence and the Champions League.

Bernabei moved to Glasgow after making his reputation at Lanus but the 21-year-old was sent off in his final competitive game for the club as Celtic made their move.

The red card, for headbutting Colon’s Augusto Schott, had created expectation that the defender would have a suspension that would delay his first league appearances for Celtic.

However, the international clearance received from the Argentine FA did not include any details of a ban still to be served, meaning he won’t be on the Scottish FA suspension list for the opening matches. Lanus played matches after the red card while Bernabei’s future was being finalised and it’s likely the suspension was considered served then.

Celtic begin the defence of their Premiership title at home to Aberdeen on July 31, with a trip to play Ross County the following week.

Bernabei is one of a number of new signings the Parkhead club have made already this summer. Goalkeeper Benjamin Siegrist has also joined, with Cameron Carter-Vickers and Jota making permanent moves after being on loan last season.
