Celtic pay tribute to nine-a-row star Tommy Callaghan following death at 78

Former Celtic, Dunfermline and Clydebank player Tommy Callaghan has died aged 78.

The midfielder was part of the Hoops’ famous nine-a-row winning side and was an unused sub in the 1970 European Cup final defeat to Feyenoord.

During his seven-year spell at the Parkhead club, they also reached the semi-finals of the continent’s premier competition three times.

After joining from the Pars in 1968, he went on to make 264 appearances for Jock Stein’s side.

He won six leagues, including the 1974 season, which set a record of nine consecutive Scottish titles that has never been bettered, five Scottish Cups, and three League Cups.

In 1976, he left Celtic to join the Bankies, where he spent the next two years before ending his career in Ireland with Galway Rovers.

In a statement released on social media and their club website on Friday, Celtic said: “We are saddened to hear that former player, Tommy Callaghan passed away early this morning at the age of 78.

“The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Celtic FC are with his friends and family at this sad time.”
