Celtic have kicked off their Europa League campaign with a flat 3-1 defeat to Ferencvaros at Celtic Park.

The Hoops, bidding to get over Sunday’s 3-0 defeat to rivals Rangers in the League Cup, began their campaign on Thursday with a defeat to the Hungarian side.

An own-goal by Liam Scales inside the first 20 minutes silenced the Celtic Park crowd, before Mika Baur was able to respond just before the break.

But the German’s equaliser was cancelled out moments later as Kristoffer Zachariassen’s backheel filtered through the Celtic defence and past Sinisalo in goal.

Martin O’Neill made changes at the break, but just two minutes after the restart former Hoops man Daniel Arzani notched a top-corner bullet to give the away side a two-goal advantage.

The home side huffed and puffed but couldn’t find a way back in as boos echoed through Celtic Park at full time.

O’Neill’s men face Rangers again on Sunday in Premiership action.
