Celtic forward Daizen Maeda has dropped out of the Japan squad for their upcoming friendly matches.

The 25-year-old was originally named in the 26-man squad for the games against Canada and Tunisia this week.

But he has now pulled out over injury concerns and has been replaced by Standard Liege midfielder Hayao Kawabe.

Maeda has been an ever-present for Celtic this season where he is preferred on the left of a front-three.

He scored his only goal of the season so far in the 3-0 win over Livingston just over two weeks ago and has scored three goals in 12 caps for his country, including one at last year’s World Cup.

He started the weekend’s 3-1 win over Kilmarnock at Celtic Park, but was replaced in the final stages of the game.

Club teammates Kyogo Furuhashi and Reo Hatate have also been named in the international set-up.

The Samarui Blue confirmed the news on Tuesday, four days before they take on Canada in Niigata.

It is not yet known how serious his injury is or of it will effect Celtic when they return to action against Hearts on October 22.
