Celtic 1-3 Rangers: Visitors bounce back to pile further pressure on Wilfried Nancy

Yang gave Celtic the lead but Rangers fought back for a comfortable win.

Rangers bounced back from a goal down to defeat Celtic at Parkhead in the first derby of the year and heap further pressure on struggling Hoops boss Wilfried Nancy.

Yang had put the hosts in front as Celtic bossed the first half but Youssef Chermiti struck twice after the break before Mikey Moore added a third Rangers goal to give Danny Rohl’s side a valuable three points and bragging rights after a frenetic game in Glasgow’s east end.

Nancy had pleaded for more time to build his side in the build-up to the game, having lost five of his seven games in charge so far, and he would have been encouraged by the start his side made.

Celtic were on the front foot and playing a fast-paced passing game that brought reward when Yang opened the scoring after 19 minutes.

The winger picked up the ball out wide around 35 yards from goal before cutting inside and driving into the Rangers box. He looked up and crashed a powerful shot past Jack Butland from an angle to send Celtic Park into raptures.

That goal seemed to add to the energetic attacking play and they created a handful of chances, with Butland called upon to save his side from falling further behind on several occasions.

The half-time whistle saw Celtic go in as deserved leaders and Rangers pondering a lacklustre performance. That was to change just minutes after the restart.

After a cut-back from Sterling seemed to have wasted an opportunity, Diomande was able to touch the ball to Raskin who slipped past Trusty to the byline and picked out Chermiti for a near post finish to draw his side level.

Rangers’ confidence after that strike was evident and they found a second just before the hour mark, with the much-maligned Chermiti finding the net again.

The striker hasn’t been short of critics since his £8m move from Everton but he cut in from the left and headed straight for goal, with Anthony Ralston in his wake and Auston Trusty failing to get across to challenge. Chermiti opened up his body and fired a shot that Schmeichel would only get a faint touch to on its way into the far corner of the net.

Remarkably, after a first half where they had been second best, Rangers imposed themselves further on a shaly Celtic side and Mikey Moore added a third with 20 minutes to go.

Djeidi Gassama’s through ball to the winger allowed him to put a curling shot against goal but Schmeichel didn’t cover himself in glory and could have done more to prevent the visitors adding to their lead.

Rangers were rampant and Celtic looked shell-shocked, but neither side could add to the scoring in the remaining minutes after a raft of substitutions added fresh legs but no real clear-cut chances.

Many Celtic fans streamed towards the exit well before full-time but those that remained saw their side play out the remainder without looking like rescuing even a draw, and booed loudly as the team and their manager headed up the tunnel.

Victory draws Rangers level with their rivals in the Premiership table and just three points behind Hearts, who face Livingston later in the afternoon.
