McGregor wants to finish career at Celtic if club continues to 'push on'

The Celtic captain reckons it's all to play for in the title race but that his side still have the edge.

Callum McGregor admits he’d like to finish his career at Celtic if the club continues to push on, something he believes the hierarchy at Parkhead also want.

The Hoops kick off their post-split fixture run against Falkirk on Saturday at home, with five games left to stay in the chase to retain their crown.

Celtic’s powers of recovery were on show at the weekend with four goals in six minutes of extra time to seal a place in the Scottish Cup final.

However, they sit three points behind leaders Hearts and two behind rivals Rangers, who they both play at home in the split.

And off the back of his fellow veteran James Forrest signing a new deal until the end of next season, skipper McGregor says the prospect of finishing his own career at Celtic is “two-fold”.

The midfielder’s current contract, signed in 2023, runs until the summer of 2028.

He said: “I’ve always said this is the club I want to be at. I’ve come through since I was eight years old. It’s in my DNA, I carry it with me every single day.

“I want to be here. I just want to make sure the club continue to push and want to be successful and drive forward.

“Having conversations with the guys upstairs, that is something they want to do.

“It’s two-fold [finishing his career at Celtic], if the club think I’ve got something to offer, and if the club want to continue to be successful and push on.”

The Celtic captain reckons it’s all to play for in the title race but that his side still have the edge.

He added: “Having seen so much change and adversity at different points of the season, we looked out of it if we’re being honest.

“To come back again shows great resilience and is another characteristic of a Celtic team that never knows when it is beaten.

“I never went into training one day and thought that we were gone. The one thing that has struck me in the dressing room is that everyone still thinks we can do this.

“I don’t think anyone can point the finger at the resilience or the character of the group, which has been there in abundance.”

He added: “I don’t think I would be doing my job properly if I didn’t think we have the edge [in the title race].

“I see what we’ve overcome this season in adversity with a change of manager twice, to fight back from where we were, and we’re in a cup final.

“A lot of the outside noise has written us off a few times, but with five games to go, we’re still right in it. It shows what we have overcome.”

Celtic captain Callum McGregor was speaking on behalf of official SPFL sponsor, William Hill, to promote the William Hill Premiership title run-in.
