'By far the worst I've seen': Clement can't explain Rangers performance

Rangers suffered a 2-0 home defeat to St Mirren that heaped pressure on the Belgian.

Rangers boss Philippe Clement admitted his side put in the worst performance of his tenure as they slumped to a 2-0 home defeat against St Mirren.

The Ibrox side were second best as goals from Mikael Mandron and Toyosi Olusanya sealed three points for the visitors and ensured Rangers suffered another dismal home result two weeks after losing to Queen’s Park.

Clement didn’t hide his disappointment at the performance but was at a loss to explain the lack of confidence or quality from his side.

“It was by far the worst I’ve seen in all the time that I’ve been here,” he said. “I understand that fans don’t want to see that kind of level.

“It’s about as a team standing up and to show more quality and find out where this nervousness came from.

“It’s terribly disappointing. We were so nervous today on the ball, in the duels, in everything. I don’t know where it’s coming from and that’s my frustration.”

The Belgian’s future at Ibrox has been questioned several times this season and he has been defended by the club’s hierarchy as changes are made at Ibrox. But he accepted it was down to him to prepare the team and that he hadn’t expected them to be so lacklustre in a game they were expected to win.

“It’s my responsibility also to get the play to put a team out with the right mindset,” he said.

“I didn’t see this one coming, this nervousness. We were below par almost all game.

“There were a few better spells during the game but not what Rangers should be.”

Asked if the players had to take responsibility for the performance, he reiterated that the buck stop s with him but admitted he didn’t know where the problem was against St Mirren and would have to reflect on what had gone wrong.

“It’s everybody,” Clement said. “In the first place, me.

“We had a plan for this game and we trained on it. It was a good training week with good quality and I didn’t see that back today.

“So I need to find out what the reason for that is and find solutions.”
