St Johnstone caretaker manager Andy Kirk is in the dark over the club’s recruitment process as he focuses on preparing for Saturday’s visit of Celtic.

Former Celtic captain and current Ayr United manager Scott Brown reportedly pulled out of the running following talks with Saints chairman Adam Webb.

St Johnstone are still said to be interested in Aberdeen coach Peter Leven and Larne manager Tiernan Lynch.

Kirk took charge of a 3-3 draw against Ross County on Saturday after his mentor, Craig Levein, was sacked, and he will continue until told otherwise.

“Things are just the same as they were last week,” he said. “We just carry on and prepare the team for the next game. That’s about as much as I can tell you, to be honest. I have had no further information than we had last week.

“The whole situation is unknown because obviously the club are looking for a new manager. But the players need guidance and organisation so while that’s the case and while me and Alec (Cleland) are in charge of it, we have to do the best job we can and be as professional as we can to leave, if that’s the case, the new manager in a good place.”

On his own situation, Kirk added: “I’ve had a conversation with Adam last week just with regards the situation we are in but not in terms of my own position.

“I have got to respect the club’s view and the job they have to do, what they are looking for, and let them deal with that process.

“If it comes round to a conversation with myself then it’s something I would consider.”

The former Hearts player and coach, who led Brechin to the Highland League title before becoming Levein’s assistant in Perth, added: “I feel like I am capable of working at this level, absolutely.”
