A fan zone in Boston has been closed a day before Scotland takes on Morocco due to an extreme weather alert.

The FIFA Fan Festival at City Hall Plaza was closed on Thursday due to anticipated severe weather conditions, including high winds.

The organisers said: “Due to the likelihood of high winds and concerns about public safety, the venue will be closed today, Thursday, June 18.

“We apologise for the inconvenience and encourage you to enjoy the sport safely where you can. If you missed out today, please register for a later date.”

The fan zone has been showing a number of World Cup games for fans visiting the city.

Local media reported the threat of flooding in the Boston area and a risk of severe thunderstorms and showers for much of Thursday, including into the evening.

Tens of thousands of the Tartan Army descended on Boston for Scotland’s opening game against Haiti.

And the Scots were celebrating after winning 1-0 on Saturday evening, thanks to a goal in the first half from John McGinn.

That was Scotland’s first win at a World Cup since 1990 and put the team in a strong position to qualify from the group, something that has never been done before.

Scotland face Morocco on Friday at Boston Stadium, with the game still set to be shown at the fan zone.
