Auston Trusty feeling at home thanks to Celtic’s ‘American Boy’ chant

The Celtic support showed their appreciation for the USA centre-back.

Celtic defender Auston Trusty has told fans that hearing their vocal tribute “means the world” to him.

Supporters chanted about a series of past favourites during Wednesday’s 2-0 defeat of Dundee United at Parkhead in reaction to comments from manager Brendan Rodgers.

But they still found time to serenade current players including Trusty and fellow United States international centre-back Cameron Carter-Vickers.

Supporters have reworked Estelle’s American Boy song to pay tribute to the defensive pairing and Trusty has lapped it up.

“It’s amazing,” the 26-year-old said. “To be far from home and not have family around… I remember I went to my first stop here in the UK, Birmingham City. In my first game I made a slide tackle and the fans started cheering ‘USA, USA’. It just made me feel right at home straight from the start and went from there.

“To be here for a short bit and have a song already, myself and Cameron, it means the world to me and just makes me really feel at home.

“It shows you have backing and people really appreciate what you do. It’s just an amazing feeling to hear fans singing and mentioning your name. It’s just a really good feeling.

“I’ve had some messages from back home and they are loving it. It’s a little bit different being in the States and you don’t really feel the atmosphere, you just have to use your imagination. But the ones who have been here know what it’s like and they can tell it’s amazing.”

Trusty hopes his performances and growing partnership with Carter-Vickers are also getting attention back home as he targets transferring the club combination to the international stage ahead of next year’s World Cup, which is being held in the US, Canada and Mexico.

“That would be amazing and that’s absolutely on my mind and I’m sure for Cameron too it’s on his mind as well,” the former Philadelphia Union, Colorado Rapids and Sheffield United player said.

“We have to do our job here and doing our job here allows us to propel ourselves into consideration for that team and get the opportunities that we need.

“We have good chemistry. Every game we get to play together and the more time we have together, as with all defenders, the more you play, the more chemistry you get.

“I can see it growing and growing every game, knowing what he’s going to do and how we are both going to react and help each other out. Game by game, it’s getting better and better.”
